Powered by the Circle Economy Foundation, the Circularity Gap Reporting Initiative (CGRi) emerged in response to the pressing need for accurate circular economy measurements. In 2018, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the inaugural Circularity Gap Report revealed a global circularity rate of only 9.1%, exposing a significant Circularity Gap. This report not only highlighted the challenge but also provided a framework for monitoring progress. By 2023, global circularity had dropped to 7.2%, signaling a worrisome trend. Today, CGRi spearheads efforts to measure the circular economy, producing an annual Circularity Gap Report that assesses global economic states and identifies pathways toward circularity. The initiative also evaluates the Circularity Gap at various levels, from countries and cities to specific sectors. To enhance the reports’ analysis and recommendations, CGRi has established a Global Data Alliance focused on leveraging data for positive impact. This collaborative effort engages stakeholders across academia, business, government, and non-profit sectors to provide input and endorse the annual report’s findings.
The Circularity Gap Report 2024 lays out a roadmap for ambitious change to unlock capital, roll out bold policies and close the skills gap.
